Counsellor Vacancy

Job Title: Counsellor (FTC – 12 months)
Location: Norwich and/or Great Yarmouth
Reporting to: Senior Counsellor
Hours: 30 hours per week available. This can be offered as one 30-hour position or split between two part-time positions of 15 hours per week. 

Contract Length: Fixed Term Contract (12 months)
Salary: £29,580 FTE (pro-rata for part-time staff) 

 

Role Summary:

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled counsellor to join our BACP-accredited service, providing specialist support to survivors of sexual abuse and violence. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality one-to-one counselling, undertake initial assessments, waiting list support, and ensure the effective administration of client-related tasks. They will also contribute to the service’s ongoing commitment to personal and professional development, best practices, and outcome measurement. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

One-to-One Counselling:

  • Deliver trauma-informed, client-centred counselling to individuals impacted by sexual abuse and violence. 
  • Offer therapy across multiple modalities, including face-to-face, online, and phone counselling. 
  • Maintain clear boundaries and ethical standards in line with the BACP Ethical Framework.

 

Initial Assessments:

  • Conduct thorough and sensitive initial assessments to determine client needs and suitability for counselling. 
  • Develop collaborative plans to address clients’ therapeutic goals.

 

Waiting List Support

  • Conduct wellbeing check-in calls with clients awaiting counselling, monitoring wellbeing and identifying any changes in risk, circumstances, or support needs; provide appropriate information, signposting, and reassurance, and maintain accurate and timely records in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

 

Safeguarding:

  • Recognising and responding to safeguarding concerns in line with the charity’s safeguarding policies and UK legislation. 
  • Reporting any safeguarding concerns promptly to the Senior Counsellor or Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). 
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records of safeguarding disclosures, ensuring compliance with GDPR and organisational procedures. 
  • Attending safeguarding training and staying informed about best practices to enhance awareness and response. 
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to create a safe and supportive environment for clients. 
  • Promoting a culture of safeguarding by encouraging open discussions and awareness within the organisation.

 

Administration: 

  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely records of client sessions in compliance with data protection regulations. 
  • Manage appointment scheduling and ensure relevant client documentation is completed.

 

Supervision and Reflective Practice: 

  • Attend regular supervision sessions to ensure the quality and safety of practice. 
  • Engage in reflective practice to promote personal resilience and professional growth.

 

Outcome Measures and Evaluation: 

  • Administer and record outcome measurement tools to track client progress, and contribute to data reporting to our funders 
  • Participate in service evaluation processes to inform and improve practice.

 

Professional Development: 

  • Undertake regular training and development to maintain professional body registration and deepen understanding of trauma and sexual violence. 
  • Stay informed about best practices and emerging research in counselling and sexual violence support.

 

Team Contribution: 

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners to ensure a holistic approach to client care. 
  • Attend team meetings, contribute to service planning, and adhere to organisational policies and procedures. 
  • Demonstrate a shared commitment to health and safety and safeguarding by adhering to organisational policies and procedures, ensuring the well-being of clients, colleagues, and the wider team 

 

Person Specification:

 

Essential Criteria:

 

Qualifications and Membership: 

  • Recognised counselling qualification (minimum Level 4 Diploma in Counselling or equivalent). 
  • Registered with a recognised counselling professional body (e.g., BACP, UKCP, NCS). 
  • Accreditation or working towards accreditation.

 

Experience: 

  • Significant experience in providing one-to-one counselling, preferably with survivors of sexual abuse and violence. 
  • Experience in conducting assessments and managing therapeutic caseloads.

 

Skills and Knowledge: 

  • Sound understanding of trauma-informed approaches and their application in counselling. 
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and the ability to respond effectively to risk. 
  • Strong administrative skills, including accurate record-keeping and use of outcome measures. 
  • Confidence and competence in using IT systems for administrative and therapeutic purposes, including online counselling platforms.

 

Personal Qualities: 

  • Empathy, resilience, and the ability to build trust with clients from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Commitment to personal and professional development. 
  • Flexibility to work at least one evening per week and adapt to service needs.

 

Desirable Criteria:

 

Additional Experience:

  • Previous work within a BACP-accredited organisation. 
  • Group facilitation or delivering workshops.

 

Additional Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the criminal justice system and its impact on survivors. 
  • Familiarity with digital counselling platforms and remote therapeutic delivery.
